Quanta shipments likely to be down

However, LG contracts ODM to manufacturer 600,000 laptops a year

The world's largest manufacturer of laptop computers, Quanta, is expected to see a decline in notebook shipments in the fourth quarter of about five to eight per cent, despite seeing growth of 25 per cent in the previous quarter according to data from Citigroup Global Market Asia.

However, despite the bad news for the Taiwanese-based ODM, many OEM laptop manufacturers are set to see continued growth with Inventec and Asustek leading the group according to the report in the Chinese-language newspaper, Economic Daily News.

It is not all bad news for Quanta though; with reports emerging that LG electronics is planning to release notebook orders to the ODM, with it citing its aim to strengthen the competitiveness of its products as one of the key reasons for the move.

The report, which emerged in the Chinese-language newspaper Commercial Times, said LG's orders are expected to reach 600,000 units. LG's current production is around 300,000-400,000 units a year according to the paper.
