Security experts F-Secure claim MacSweeper is a con
F-Secure’s security specialist, Patrik Runald, has stated that MacSweeper, which claims to find security holes in Apple PCs, is a scam.
Runald claims that consumers are tricked by a web scan, which finds flaws in their computer and suggest they spend $40 on MacSweeper to remove it. The scan will tell you that there are security vulnerabilities in folders that only exist on Macs.
His suspicions were aroused when he noticed that the ‘about us’ section on the MacSweeper.com website was cut and paste from Symantec’s.
The domain’s owners have also masked their identities by using anonymity services.
Runald goes on to claim that, although Macs are not any less secure, users should watch our for the social engineering tricks just like Windows users have done for years.
