HD DVDs to be made available online
Woolworths has announced it is to exclusively back Blu-ray by only stocking Blu-ray DVDs from March. However, HD DVDs will still be available from the retailer’s website.
This news comes after Woolworths revealed that Blu-ray DVDs outsold HD DVDs by ten-to-one over Christmas. A Blu-ray DVD chart section will now appear in all 820 Woolworth stores.
“Sales figures clearly show that the market is moving towards one format of high definition DVD,” says Woolworths DVD buyer Steven McGunigel. “The main reason is the success of Sony’s PlayStation 3 machine.
Because it plays Blu-ray discs, there are just under a million homes in the UK that can view the new high definition format. There is no where near that number of HD-DVD players around.”
“Switching to Blu-Ray only will provide one clear offer to customers in the format they want to watch high definition movies in.”
A spokesperson for HMV told PC Retail last week that HMV would not force a choice on their consumers and will continue to support both formats.

“Circuit City NOT ceasing to stock HD DVD”

HD DVD is not being dropped by Circuit City. A blog incorrectly stated that they were but it has since been proved to have been based on a price error and false.
Please research your stories before you publish them.
