Email reportedly from Microsoft states that OS is 'still on drawing board'

Recent rumours suggesting that Windows Vista's successor might arrive as soon as 2009 have been apparently dispelled.

In an email to technology site WinVistaClub, Microsoft reportedly said that its next generation operating system, dubbed Windows 7, is still at the planning stage.

It also stressed that any new OS would be at least three years in development.

Along with development, Windows 7 is likely to go through at least one full year of internal and pre-release testing.

Taking that into account, Windows 7 isn't likely to hit retail until 2012 at the very earliest.
