World's first 'On-Demand' store launches

Tribeka and On Demand hail revolutionary store as future of software retail

The world's first on-demand retail store has opened in London's Borders Books store on Oxford Street, carrying over 1,600 titles in 400 sq ft of retail space.

On-Demand and Tribeka officially launched the concession yesterday, with both media and customer reception proving overwhelmingly positive.

Tribeka's COO, Stephen Precious told PC Retail at the event that the technology behind the store was so disruptive to the way firms have traditionally think about software retail, and that it has the potential to totally revolutionise the industry.

PC Retail previously reported on Borders' deal with the firms to be the first to open the concession last month.

Speaking at the launch, Precious said: "This launch further establishes SoftWide as the world’s leading on demand solution for software and entertainment product. We are delighted that Borders have demonstrated the foresight to be the first retailer in the world to enter this space.

"I consider software to be an ideal compliment to the Borders offer and that it is through the non-specialist retail channel that we will attract a whole new customer to this fantastic and growing product category."

To read more about Tribeka's Softwide system, and On Demand Retail's plans, make sure you read the feature in the March issue of PC Retail, out later this month.

I was in the store yesterday and bought some software there. I was a little sceptical but it was the only place that had it in stock so I thought I might as well give it a try.

I'd say it's a little like Argos in that you pay, are given a ticket and then you get your product like 2 minutes later. I went and grabbed a cup of coffee from the Starbucks in Broders and by the time I'd finished and come back, it was ready and waiting... can't really tell the difference between the copy that was burnt for me in the store and one i'd pick up in say Currys.

I'd recommend it!

i still don't understand it - what do you actually buy? Books that aren't on the shelf?

Ah, I see what you mean. It has stuff like anti-virus software, some games, language, educational and learning stuff as well.

Basically, you pick what software you want, take it to the till and then they burn it onto a disc for you. You then get it three or four minutes later. It's pretty cool.

The guy who was on the till said the great thing about it is that they can never run out of stock so anything that they say they have, you can buy.
