Blu-ray prices soar

Prices reach all-year high, as the format enjoys monopoly in the high definition market

Samsung, Sony and Sharp are selling Blu-ray players for the highest prices all year, following what is generally considered the demise of rival format HD-DVD, according to a price comparison on Tom’s Hardware.

Advocate vendors of Blu-ray dropped prices of players earlier this year, in a move which put further pressure on the HD-DVD format.

The price of Blu-ray players fell below $300 for a standalone player during this period – however now the average price is now around $400.

Meanwhile, prices of HD-DVD players still on the market continue to plummet – representing a significant price gap between the two formats.

I'm an HD-DVD fan through and through. I hate blu-ray. But even I can't stand how blatantly misleading this statement is. Yes of course BR prices are up since they have their monopoly, but it's not as bad as this tries to make it sound.

I'm not sure the statement is trying to make anything sound bad – its simply pointing out the difference in average price now compared to the begining of the year.

Personally I don't think its very good if Blu-ray prices rise now it has a monopoly – they could jack prices up indefinately! Will that not just put people off hi def totally?

Monopolies Monopolies Monopolies !!!!!!

Yes the Price will go up and why...... because they have no suceeded in removing HD format from the shelves.

Yes the same thing would have happened if it had gone the other way..

Another way to get as much out of the public as possible....
