Gates gives next Microsoft operating system, codenamed Windows 7, a rough release date
Microsoft co-founder and chairman Bill Gates has said the next version of the firm’s operating system, codenamed Windows 7, will arrive “sometime in the next year or so.”
"I'm super enthused about what it will do in lots of ways," he said in a seminar on corporate philanthropy held during an annual meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank, reported Reuters. "That'll be sometime in the next year or so that we'll have a new version."
Gates added that the operating system will revolutionise the mobile sector and transform the desk of the future with touch screen features allowing users to manipulate the computer desktop with their hands.
It was expected that the OS would appear in early 2010, in line with Microsoft’s statement that it would release a new version of Windows roughly three years after Vista hit shelves in January 2007. However Gates’ statements imply it will arrive somewhat sooner.

“Windows”

I wonder if this is a sign that Microsoft is moving towards an Apple way of updating operating systems? Hopefully they'll sort some of the bloat out of the operating system so it'll start quicker... Maybe rebuild the entire operating system without needed to boot through DOS perhaps?

And then he will give us our money back for vista being in BETA version for all this time.

Vista isn't as bad as everyone makes out. It's not Microsoft's fault if third party companies can't be bothered to update their drivers

I'm really looking forward for the next version, I hope it will be better and there should be some improvement since the last version. So the new version, codenamed Windows 7, should be changed and should be much easier to use.

The problem is though Waleed, many of the problem that have caused Vista to have a bad name are the fault of third party companies who haven't upgraded their drivers or their programs to work with Vista. Any new operating system will experience the same problems.
It was exactly the same for XP and Windows 98/2000/ME before that.

Vista's beautiful ! As already said, the same problem arose with the launch of XP and its associated driver issues - lazy third party companies not getting theri act together, despite having the beta version in their hands a long time before release. I waited several months after public release of Vista for new drivers for my Sony Ericsson 'phone, so I could synch it with Outlook - just not good enough. Microsoft are driving innovation and new technology for the masses, the industry must try to keep up. Not perfect - I know, but my business and many others depends on Microsoft software - keep it coming - but in 64 bit only please!

I Got vista and had it for a week and in that week my computer (Dell XPS) crashed 5 times. I was already thinking about apple products but Microsoft gave me no other choice. i lost all my files and my backed up files. i went to Apple and i have had nothing go wrong. This new windows is going to be just bad as vista. they should have kept XP going but because of vista they are losing custermers to Linex and Apple OS

Nah, you two got it all the wrong way round, M$ should be pulling their fingers out (or just sell out while they still can). not a single company has even touched vista (without going back to XP within a day or two), and they aint gonna give windows 7 a second glance, why down-grade to the next windows version when they could UP-grade to linux/unix. And all this "transform the desk of the future with touch screen features allowing users to manipulate the computer desktop with their hands" nonsense is just a load of bull-**** to get some attention.

First of all... Mac is in no way shape or form better or worse than PCs. It depends on your preferences and what you are using your computer for. If you're a programmer... MACS SUCK. They're too complicate to program with because there are so many restrictions at the hardware level. Why do you think games always come out for PC first? Because they felt like it? No, because PCs allow flexibility which I'll admit create risk of fatal errors to your computer if you don't know how to take care of it.
Second of all... Touch screens allowing you to manipulate your computer with your hands are not bull****. There are already people building rescue robots for goodness sake. What's so hard to believe about touch screen desks? If anything, from what I've learn in my computer architecture class, a touch screen desk would be easier than a rescue robot.
Third of all... No company will resort to Linux to run there personal network. That would be like leaving the door to your company completely open and then helping people coming in take whatever they want. Linux is open source, remember B(.)(.)B? That means anybody does whatever they want to it which also means anyone can make any kind of virus they want to attack a company that may have done something remotely bad to them and cause that company to lose lots of money. And don't even try to say anything about Macs being used for networks, because Macs cost so much more already and are way to simplified to make networks for whole companies with them.

@ Angry dude: True, anyone can make modifications to linux, but the kernel undergoes very heavy quality control, they wont let some hacker gust throw in malware. Also linux isn't the only other option, there's freeBSD and netBSD, which M$ themselves use to run there M$N servers, if they can't trust their own software, why should anyone else?
The average windows server goes down every couple of months, whereas unix based servers can go 3 or 4 years with only an hour or so down time. As for my dissing of the touch screen stuff, I know touch screens are already in use, but the implementation of such technology in the windows OS will be left solely to the manufacturers, M$ always let every one else do the hard work, and cut corners whenever possible.
