CEO Neil Berkett says firm is not opposed to paid-for traffic shaping
Whilst its broadband services continue to be a hit with consumers, Virgin’s reputation amongst tech-heads has taken another hit with the admission that it is in talks with providers about traffic shaping the delivery of certain content.
The firm has previously outraged file-sharers and data-freedom fighters by stating that it is considering a ‘three-strikes-and-you’re-out’ policy against those using file-sharing sites.
Now, talking to the Royal Television Society’s Television magazine, Virgin media CEO Neil Berkett has stated: "This net neutrality thing is a load of bollocks," adding that Virgin is in talks with content providers about paying to have their content delivered faster than other who are not Virgin partners.
And on the subject of new, bandwidth-hungry services such as BBC’s iPlayer, Berkett added that “public service broadcasters who choose not to pay would end up in bus lanes with their content delivered to consumers at a lower speed”.

“And I say shaping is a load of *******s”

I'd like to see what OFCOM would like to say about Virgin threatening to shape traffic from the UK's Public Service Provider...
The worst thing about this is, Virgin is running entirely on fiber optics and so have no excuse to be whinging about bandwidth problems...

Customers PAY boadband fees to access the content that they would prefer, at the best speeds. Customers do not PAY to view content preferred by Virgin at a good speed and rest as if it were a dial-up.
If Virgin thinks its customers are to be treated like mugs, maybe the customers should vote with their feet and show Virgin who is the mug here.

What a Thug the CEO is; where did he come from? I guess from his comments if he does not like having customers then he has said the right thing and can join Compuserve etc. Going by his plans Virgin will just become an on demand service that uses internet technology. I personally think customers want to access the whole internet not what subscribes to Virgin. First Phorm and now this. RIP Virgin! Anyway I thought the bus lane was a faster lane. Maybe we have misunderstood him and he is offering the I Player a quicker lane if they don't pay.

These guys are a business. There's clearly some sort of revenue on the table to ensure their partners content arrives smoothly. How is that different from Virgin hosting said content on local servers? It's not.
I don't agree with Virgin's stance that the BBC should pay anyone for iPlayer. These guys ARE broadband providers, this is their job. However I don't begrudge Virgin shaping traffic at all. If punters don't like it they'll vote with their feet. Where's the problem?

The problem is with Virgin you can't simply change provider like you can if you have a BT line. You'd have to end your minimum term contract then arrange for BT to come out and sort your line out...

WTF!!
This is just an excuse to raise revenue. I pay for the ability to download content. I choose the content I want to download and then download it. If the service becomes too slow to use then I will move service providers.
Anybody out there who discovers that their ISP is slowing down access to content - move..!
Or is this purely and simply an opportunity for Virgin to exploit their monopoly! Surely OFCOM and the Monopolies commission should have a look.
Gah...! I am so irritated by this man.
The Virgin name does not stand for "Shafting it's customers", it stands for fairness and customer service. At no stage would this be good customer service.... Richard, have a word please

Either look at it like they're slowing stuff down, or look at it that they're ensuring various things stream well if they have a commercial partnership with them. The latter is what Virgin are saying today, dealing with the fallout of this quote. They're not wrong either really.
One is an emotively charged connotation where you get to make all sorts of indignant statements as above, the other is a sound business move to develop further revenue streams. Useful when you're as far in the hole as Virgin is.
If you're a Virgin customer you can move fine. Unless you signed up to some combined television contract package. Since Virgin is cable, to get ADSL you just need to call BT and get them to switch on your phone. That's it.
This stuff about the BBC's iPlayer. If you've got 50Mb (!) cable from Virgin and you can't stream shows from iPlayer because of shaping - that's a good reason to move. Until that happens discussion of how evil Virgin are being is somewhat premature don't you think?

This is not about virgin being evil, simply about them changing the internet service they provide. To say net neutrality is a load of *******s is a dangerous statement.
It seems to me that this is just the start of internet providers changing how the internet works for users in an attempt to gain more control over how they use the internet. If this catches on then the internet as we know it will be gone.
So this is highly dangerous, do expect no emotive comments on such a subject. I hope this buries Virgin Media.
