Hopes resting on a successful push into the US later this year

A senior manager at Samsung has said that the firm will pull out the laptop market in three years unless it manages to triple sales of its flagging division, with it hoping a major US push will help it meet the target.

Speaking at Samsung's South Korean office, senior manager of overseas sales and marketing Sukyong Hong warned that if the firm does not ship 11 million laptops in 2011, the the division will no longer be sustainable.

The firm currently controls around 1.7 per cent of the global laptop market, but has said that it must more than triple that to 5.7 per cent for it to be able to maintain what it has described as the 'minimum survival' volume.

Hong said that the firm's push into the US will help boost its market share to the required level.
