Falling market share leads to speculation that iPhone 2 will be cheaper than current model
A report in today’s The Times claims that the new iPhone, which will be announced by Apple on June 9th, could be made available for as little as £100 – and that it could go on sale in the UK only weeks after its announcement.
Apple looks set to relax the rules, which is strictly imposed on resellers of its current iPhone, that saw the machine go on sale for £269 and £369 (along with a £35 monthly contract for a year and a half) for the 8GB and 16GB models respectively.
The decision seems to have been made following the radical surge in sales that came with Apple’s move to slash the price of the 8GB player to £169 in May.
However, it also comes on the heels of new stats which show that the iPhone’s share of the smart phone market in the US has fallen from 26.7 per cent in Q4 ’08 to 19.2 per cent for the first quarter of this year.
