3G iPhone announcement tonight

Comments (6)

Yes, it’s still not officially announced – but all that’s set to change at 6pm this evening

It’s easy to forget that for all the talk of the 3G iPhone, the device is nothing more than rumour and speculation at the moment – though that’s all set to change when Apple reveals the new model in San Francisco tonight at a little after 6pm.

What will or will not be confirmed is still a matter for debate, of course. The only certainty seems to be that Apple will unveil the iPhone 2, and that the device will be a 3G enabled mobile phone.

Beyond that, you can take your pick from any of the numerous rumours that have been doing the rounds for the last couple of months.

It seems that two flavours of device will be announced, most likely one 16GB model and one 32GB model – a step up from the 8GB and 16GB iterations of the current device.

Also rumoured is the possibility of an ‘iPhone Nano’ type machine – a smaller take on the new model, possibly excluding 3G functionality in favour of the current GPRS technology.

There’s also been talk of integrated GPS, or satellite tracking, turning iPhone 2 into a fully-fledged Sat Nav. Some talk of the chance of some new mobile TV functionality, too. And expect this device to be at least a little harder to crack, and subsequently unlock, than the current model – though that probably won’t stop hackers breaking the machine within two minutes of it being announced.

More interesting is the possibility of the iPhone 2 being free to customers on the O2 network. If it’s not free, it seems that we can still expect the device to cost far less than the £269 tag the initial offering demanded. There’s also a chance that current iPhone owners and O2 customers will be offered some sort of discounted upgrade package.

However, with no UK press conference planned the most likely news for UK iPhone lovers is no news, leaving many hoping for a pre-Christmas launch date confirmation later down the line.

good news!
I just hope they dont cripple it like the iPhone 1... The bluetooth is useless, no MMS, no mp3 ringtones (well not easily)
My iPhones is cracked, of course, im on vodafone, and hey for £265 it was a damn good upgrade as the next best sim-free phone was about £400!!!
we'll see.....

Hey Brett it doesnt matter if you sign a new contract and get a new phone, you can still purchase the iPhone it wont affect your contract in no way.

Thing is Eve,

It's looking increasingly like the new iPhone will be subsidised. I can't justify spending £270-odd pound on a phone. I can pick up an amazing Windows Mobile handset for £100 on a contract.

If it isn't ready when I have to upgrade, they won't get me as a customers – and I imagine with the credit crunch, people are going to struggle to justify the purchase.
