PC World looks to crash Carphone party

Retailer launches raft of mobile broadband offers, which it claims is largest in UK

PC World has reacted to the increasing encroachment of Carphone Warehouse into subsidising laptops with mobile broadband subscriptions by announcing a raft of its own deals with Vodafone, 3 and T-Mobile for its 'Get Connected' initiative.

The retailer is looking to up the ante over recent offerings from competitors by claiming it will stock the widest range of laptops available as part of mobile broadband deals, with Sony, Dell, Toshiba, Compaq, Acer, Asus and Advent all on board.

"Connectivity and content services are as important to customers as the hardware they buy," said head of commercial development at PC World, Glenn Orchard.

"Get Connected reflects customer demand for a complete, non-stop solution that provides the way for our customers to not only get a great deal on a laptop, but also get connected to the right service."

Orchard believes that the firm's position as the largest computer retailer gives the firm a unique edge in its battle against Carphone Warehouse. "As the UK's leading laptop retailer, we are uniquely placed to offer impartial advice and the widest possible choice of packages."

The retailer was an early pioneer in UK internet service provision with its Freeserve subsidiary.

Ha, it just makes me laugh...
Get Connectedonnected sounds very familiar to Carphone's Wireless World so it sounds like Carphone have found themselves a stalker. Yea PC World will be able to offer a decent range of laptops but you dont buy a laptop and think can i have a contract broadband connection with that... its normally the other way around so Carphone offering a selection of laptops from basic to gaming machines seems more logical, along with the fact they actually will know what theyre talking about in terms of contracts. All i know PC World offer in terms of contracts usually is those store credit agreements, and we all know why theyre a bad idea.
Lets just see what Carphone have to say in Autumn, and i kind of feel sorry for the PC World guys, they barely know what theyre doing at the moment, let alone throwing in another product. Not their fault, just poor training. Im sure they'll look for another company to work for 2008/09. Best Buy maybe?

It's all supported by mobile operators transferring their subsidy budgets away from mobile phones towards PCs...
