IBM retains server top spot

IT giant reclaims pole position in server market.

IBM has retaken its position as market leader, pushing Hewlett Packard back in to second place, according to revised figures from Gartner.

In May, Gartner reported that worldwide server revenue grew by four per cent accrediting HP with a greater market share than it had for the first quarter of 2008, making its revenues better than IBM.

However further analysis has prompted a revision of the figures with only 2.5 per cent growth and IBM retaining its number one spot with revenues of $3.9 billion compared to HP’s $3.7 billion, despite showing lower year-on-year growth.

IBM’s continued success in this market has been attributed to its concentration on high-end hardware. Its system z mainframes have enjoyed continued popularity with the financial sector, which Gartner says accounts for over a quarter of the entire server market.
