Milestone passed in first weekend of availability across 21 countries

Apple has confirmed it sold one million iPhone 3G's over the weekend.

In a short statement Apple CEO Steve Jobs said: “iPhone 3G had a stunning opening weekend. It took 74 days to sell the first one million original iPhones, so the new iPhone 3G is clearly off to a great start around the world.”

iPhone 3G went on sale in the UK last Friday (July 11th), with demand such that police had to be called in to help close Apple's flagship London store following a computer failure.

The one millionth device was sold sometime on Sunday.

iPhone 3G is now available in 21 countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and the US.

It will go on sale in France on July 17th.

Meanwhile, iPhone and iPod users have downloaded a staggering ten million applications from App Store since it launched last Thursday. The top five best selling programs are:

1. Super Monkey Ball, SEGA, £5.99
2. Crash Bandicoot, VG Mobile, £5.99
3. Band, MooCow Music, £5.99
4. Enigmo, Pangea Software, £5.99

“How long...”

How long before a new model comes out and those million people who just bought this one finds themselves with an expensive, outdated product?

Or maybe I'm just too cynical...

Yeh, quite agree; I'd leave it to circa Sept 2023 as 7G is on the road map for release then, though I guess it might slip a year of two. In the mean time, put your money into a Norther Rock a/c or buy some South Sea Islands stocks.
