Google and Yahoo forge alliance

Search engine firms confirm advertising deal despite US government probe

Google and Yahoo will begin collaborating on search based advertising by early October, in spite of a probe into the deal by the US Justice Department.

The deal will allow Google to place adverts on Yahoo’s site, which critics say will give the former too much sway in the lucrative online advertising sector. This prompted an antitrust probe earlier this year.

"We are going to move forward," said Google chief executive Eric Schmidt.

"We are in the process of talking to the government. They've not indicated one way or the other how they're dealing with us. We always worry a little bit, but we think our arguments are pretty strong."
