Communications minister Lord Carter describes sector as a 'critical growth sector'

Ministers are heralding the £52bn communications industry as key to "rebooting" the UK economy following the current economic crisis.

The comments came from Lord Carter, who holds the newly created role of communications minister as he spoke to the Financial Times on Friday. Lord Carter claimed that his ministerial boss Lord Mandelson was "absolutely convinced the digital economy can be a key part of a rebooting of the economy".

Speaking about the reason for his position, Lord Carter explained: "The economy is going through turbulent times and particular sectors...not least the financial services sector, are going through particularly turbulent times.

"And therefore, let’s look at other sectors...technology, media, telecoms is a critical growth sector...something we are extremely good at, quite well positioned in and could be even better positioned."
