HP turns to Linux

Vendor installs open source OS on business desktops

PC giant HP has started shipping its Compaq DC5850 desktop PCs with a pre-installed copy of Novell's SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 operating system.

The company says that its is currently only offering this package in the United States but has not yet confirmed whether this will available directly from HP or through its resellers.

The DC5850 runs on an AMD Athlon or Semplon processor with an integrated AMD Radeon 3100 GPU and can carry up to 8GB of RAM.


HP has also said that it is partnering with Novell to use its OpenOffice suite to put together a set of 40 applications aimed at schools.
