Epson pioneers integrated toner

New strategy threatens to cut out the third party

Epson is trialling a new type of inkjet printer that comes pre-loaded with toner, according to Microscope.

Once the ink runs out, which should be after 8,500 colour pages, the vendor will collect and replace the unit. The original printer will then be sent back to be recycled, much like milk bottles.

The move is expected to increase Epson’s green credentials, due to the lack of disposable components, while cutting out third party suppliers – several of whom have faced patent infringement charges from Epson.

“We are trying to establish the principle of whether this business model will pay back the customer and ourselves,” commented Epson UK’s managing director, Nick Butler.
