290 jobs may go at Phones4U

Admin positions likely to be axed as retailer looks to increase customer-facing roles

Phones4U may cut as many as 290 jobs as it looks to restructure the company's retail operation.

According to reports, the firm is in the middle of a consultation period with affected staff. It is thought that the majority of positions affected are admin roles.

The retailer is believed to be creating over 200 customer-facing roles, with the majority of those affected by the restructuring being transferred to the new positions.

Phones4U said that should the plans go ahead, it expects the number of involuntary redundancies to be around the 30 mark and that most staff will be found jobs elsewhere in the firm.

"Despite the tough economic climate, Phones 4U will continue to invest in its people and the business," the firm said in a statement. "The company continues to perform profitably, and its recent growth in market share has driven the need for an increase in customer facing roles.

"However to maintain the company's position for the future it is now looking to streamline time spent on non-customer activity."
